Social networks and messengers show profile photos as circles. Upload a rectangular picture and the platform crops it for you, often cutting off part of a face or a logo. Cropping the circle yourself means the frame contains exactly what you want.
The frame here always stays a circle, whatever the proportions of the original. Move it over a face or an object and resize it with the corner handles. The result is saved as PNG, WebP or JPG.
However you drag the handles, the frame keeps its round shape.
In PNG and WebP everything outside the circle is transparent, so the avatar sits on any background.
The circle's content is copied from the original as is; compression only happens when saving to JPG or WebP.
On a phone you move the frame by touch, just as you would with a mouse.
Avatars on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Telegram, Discord and WhatsApp. Profile photos for Zoom and Google Meet. Round logos, badges and community icons.
PNG is the default: the corners outside the circle are transparent and no quality is lost. WebP is transparent too but lighter. JPG has no transparency, so the corners are filled with white — fine for a white background or for print.
No, the frame is always round. For a rectangle or custom proportions, use the “Crop image” tool.
You decide what ends up in the center. Transparent corners also matter for a logo on a website or in a presentation.
No. The browser crops it on a canvas, and the file is not sent to a server.
“-circle” is added to the original name, for example photo-circle.png.
