How to compress a photo to a target size in KB
Government portals, job applications, email and classifieds sites often set a cap like 200 KB per photo. Regular compression is guesswork here: you never know how big the file will end up. This tool works the other way round. You set the limit, and it picks the quality and, if needed, the resolution.
For every file you see the size before and after, the quality used and the final resolution. The result is saved as JPEG or WebP.
A limit in KB or MB
Pick 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1000 KB, or type your own number. The file will not go over it.
Best quality that fits
The tool doesn't shrink files just to be safe. It looks for the highest quality that still fits.
Scans stay with you
Compression runs on your device, so ID scans and application photos are never uploaded.
Up to 20 photos at once
One limit for the whole batch, and several results download as a single ZIP file.
How the size is found
The tool first tries 95% quality. If the file is too big, it runs a binary search between 95% and 30%, with eight attempts at most. When even 30% is not enough, it scales the image down in 85% steps. It never goes below 600 pixels on the long side. One kilobyte here means 1000 bytes, so the file passes any site's size check.
JPEG or WebP
Almost every site and form accepts JPEG. WebP is usually smaller at the same quality, but older systems can't open it. If you're not sure a form takes WebP, choose JPEG.
Limitations
A very small limit on a detailed photo means a visible loss of sharpness. If the target can't be reached even at 600 pixels, you'll see the smallest size achieved instead of a ruined file. Transparent PNG areas turn white. Capture date, location and the color profile are not kept. Each file can be up to 30 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Pick 200 KB, add your photo and download the result. The tool chooses the quality and, if needed, the resolution for you.
Not entirely, because JPEG and WebP are lossy formats. On simple images the difference is barely visible. Detailed shots under a small limit will show artifacts.
A JPG, PNG or WebP that already fits is returned unchanged. Compressing it again would only lower the quality.
Yes, HEIC is converted to JPEG or WebP. The extra module for this only loads when you add a HEIC file.
