Why photos come out dark and how to fix them

A photo usually turns out dark when there's a very bright light source in the frame: a window, the sky or a lamp. The camera lowers exposure so it doesn't blow out, and the face or subject ends up in shadow. Simply raising overall brightness doesn't help — the window and sky turn into white patches. That's why these presets work selectively: they lift shadows and midtones much more and even tone down the highlights a little.

If the photo was taken in the evening or indoors with poor light, choose “Low Light Rescue” — it brightens more strongly and mutes color noise. For slightly dull daytime shots, “Bright & Clear” is enough. Compare with the before/after slider and adjust the strength from 0 to 200% until the photo looks natural.

Frequently asked questions

Choose “Brighten Shadows”: it lifts shadows much more than highlights and even tones down the brightest areas slightly, so windows and sky don't burn out.
